In Bhutan, The Industrial Property Act of the Kingdom of Bhutan, 2001 governs and deals with the mechanism of Patent Protection.

Product Patent is the only type of Patent Protection available in Bhutan.

The following are the types of Patent Applications:

• Non-Convention Application
• Convention Application
• Divisional Application

The Patent of invention lasts for 20 years in Bhutan.

The Time Frame for Examination from the Date of Application is 18 months approximately and the Time Frame for Publication from the Date of Acceptance is 6 months.

In Bhutan, an Opposition against a Patent Application can’t be raised.
